Island Hopping: The J. McLaughlin Tropical EditIsland Hopping: The J. McLaughlin Tropical Edit

Destination: Sun-kissed. A curated travel guide for your much needed Vitamin D. Keep reading for insider tips from dreamy destinations to recharging resorts, and of course, how to dress your best at the beach.

After an extra 6 weeks of winter, thanks to Punxsutawney Phil, we are all ready to soak up the sun as soon as possible. Beaches all over are calling our names, from Maui, Hawaii to Harbour Island in the Bahamas. Luckily, our new arrivals just dropped with chic vacation-ready styles for your next tranquil retreat–from elegant dinners at sunset to days spent reading by the pool, we have the style guide for your next getaway, below.

Destination: Harbour IslandDestination: Harbour Island

We can’t think of anything better than an island getaway revolving around Spring’s favorite palette… romantic creams, tropical caramels, vibrant pastels, and blush pinks!

Where To Eat:

Not only is The Landing Restaurant renowned for its fresh seafood and local ingredients, but the building itself also serves as a historical landmark on the island. A balcony that overlooks the harbor for your choice of brunch or dinner is just another perk of this experiential restaurant.

For brunch, we recommend the eggs benedict. Although this dish is only served at brunch on Sundays, the homemade hollandaise sauce makes it worth planning around. For dinner, the crab stick appetizer offers you a taste of the exquisite and fresh flavors Chef Madelene Pedican has to offer, leaving you eager for your entrée to arrive.

Where To Stay:

Located along the island’s beautiful pink beach, The Dunmore Hotel is a dreamy Bahamian retreat. While we’re not occupied tanning on the beach or by the pool, you can find us breaking a sweat on the hotel’s pickleball courts, then relaxing in one of the fitness center’s saunas. Depending on your party size, we recommend staying at one of the private residences–with private beach access to the cotton-candy sand, indulgent bath and beauty products by pioneers of luxury Molton Brown, a serene outdoor shower, and more, odds are high you’ll extend your trip.

Where To Play:

The perfect plan for a perfect day.

First: coffee. Stop by Café Cocoa for a morning boost. Their coffee beans are roasted locally in Nassau, ensuring the finest quality of their artisan crafted espressos.

An automatic Instagram post–and incredibly fun– our next stop is located in between Harbour Island and Eleuthera. The Eleuthera Ocean Swings require a boat ride to reach as they are set in the middle of the ocean. With two swings right next to each other, the experience quickly brings upon childhood nostalgia that will make you close your eyes, with the sun beaming on your face, smiling from ear to ear.

After working up an appetite from swinging in the ocean, we love to visit Queen Conch for a beautiful sunset view, and of course, conch fritters.

What To Pack:

Destination: Turks & CaicosDestination: Turks & Caicos

From city to shore… This packing list combines our favorite everyday essentials with a beachy twist. Recreate the revitalization of your lomi-lomi massage with Chanel’s purifying and radiance-revealing vanilla seed face scrub.

Where To Eat:

You would think to stay close to the beach for an island dining experience, however, Coco Bistro, set within TCI’s largest palm grove, is our favorite place for dinner and drinks–it quickly became a repeat dining experience for us on the island, and we believe it will do the same for you. The island ambiance, mixed with executive chef Stuart Gray’s flavorful cuisine, makes Coco Bistro one of the most popular restaurants on Providenciales. We highly recommend starting with the shrimp and avocado spring rolls, followed by the grilled Caicos lobster tail.

Where To Stay:

An oasis from Grace Village, the island's main town, The Shore Club is the epitome of a tranquil retreat. Strategically composed of Caribbean architecture and décor, this is the ideal spring getaway. When we aren’t sunbathing by one of its four pools–lap pool included–, we will be found at the hotel’s sensational Dune Spa getting a massage. The Long Bay Spa Ritual is unmatched–beginning with an exotic island body scrub and gentle brown sugar cane body polish blended from pure white sand found on Long Bay Beach, Salt Cay sea salt and coconut oil, this treatment exfoliates your body in preparation for a rhythmic lomi-lomi massage that you will be dreaming about for years to come. After warm sand pouches are used to loosen your muscles, a frangipani oil is brushed over your skin leaving a sun-kissed glow and whisper of gardenia honeyed flowers.

Other amenities include complimentary non-motorized water sports equipment–making snorkeling in the island’s turquoise blue ocean a must. Each of The Shore Club’s suites and villas offer a restoring mix of comfort and luxury, but our favorite is the Estate Villas–their private courtyard, personal concierge, heated whirlpool, and built-in sauna are peak luxury.

Where To Play:

After relaxing with our favorite book on the beach for a day, we love to immerse ourselves in the local culture. The Thursday Fish Fry–which takes place on Bight Beach, just West of Grace Bay–is a must-visit. The event takes place from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM, offering live music and over a dozen local food trucks to choose from, complete with the finest cuisine on the island.

What To Pack:

Destination: Maui, HawaiiDestination: Maui, Hawaii

It’s giving… Stress free. Dress, look, and eat like the queen you are. Apply La Mer The Lip Volumizer for a head start.

Where To Eat:

Dinner at Merriman’s–a farm-to-table ingredient focused restaurant in Maui (and Hawaii’s first carbon neutral restaurant)–is the height of luxury. Owner and chef, Peter Merriman, creates an intoxicating ambience through his use of the island’s fresh produce, seafood, and meat to create signature dishes such as harissa-spiced scallops and manila clams with locally sourced parmesan potato gnocchi, roasted escobedo farm zucchini, and orange-saffron butter sauce. The romantic setting–a well-lit outdoor porch that shows off Maui’s gorgeous ocean views–is the only thing that could distract you from the delicacies on your plate.

For those who love a surprise, we suggest blindly ordering the night special.

Where To Stay:

Hotel Wailea matches the island’s beautiful terrain, as well as its relaxing feel. Voted the number one hotel in Hawaii in 2022, Hotel Wailea “boasts an unprecedented level of intimacy, privacy, and exclusivity.” Plus, it’s a ten minute drive from our Maui store–the chicest place to bolster your tropical wardrobe.

Located on the Pacific Ocean, Hotel Wailea has an unobstructed view of three Hawaiian islands and provides sandy seclusion from Maui, while also conveying the island’s tropical nature through a medley of gardens and waterfalls. One of the hotel’s main attractions is the adult-only atmosphere it provides for guests, allowing a truly relaxing and stress-free vacation. The views from both the ocean and garden suites are exquisite, but we recommend the lushness of tropical gardens, cascading waterfalls, and koi ponds seen in the garden view suites.

Where To Play:

For adventure-seekers and history lovers alike, the Road to Hana–a 64-mile excursion–takes you along the coast of the island for spectacular views as well as historical landmarks. Running through the Koolau Forest Reserve, the Road to Hana consists of magnificent waterfalls and black sand beaches–both unique to Maui. You can travel the Road to Hana in two ways: by driving the road yourself or booking a van tour–most tours begin around 6:30 AM and drop you back off at your hotel around 4:30 PM, making the full trip around 10 hours long. We recommend the van tour as not only does it allow you to travel more comfortably but you may meet new people.

What To Pack:

Destination: St. JohnDestination: St. John

The sound of the ocean, a good book, and Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen–A simple yet effective recharge method

Where To Eat:

Immerse yourself in the island’s traditions and cuisines at the historical restaurant, Morgan’s Mango, which first opened in St. John in 1993. Owning the catchphrase, “Cuisine of the Caribbean”, Morgan’s menu offers a wide variety of dishes, with inspiration ranging from Haitian to Puerto Rican to Mayan. Every dish on the menu is euphoric, but we recommend getting the Coconut Panko Encrusted Fresh Grouper, which is prepared with a mouth-watering lemongrass reduction–just make sure you save room for the restaurant’s infamous key lime pie.

Where To Stay:

When we think about a beach vacation, our mind immediately goes to the Caribbean. Family-owned, Lovango Resort & Spa, in St. John combines island glamor with a more casual setting so that guests can enjoy the beautiful views and outdoors–resulting in our favorite kind of camping… Glamping. We recommend hanging out in one of the ocean view tree houses the resort has to offer. But, if this isn’t your style, there are plenty of luxury tents that will be sure to enhance your island experience. The luxury of being on a private island, along with exquisite design and endless activities, Lovango is unlike any other resort. When we aren’t enjoying the unique glamping experience, we spend our time lounging by the 70-foot infinity pool and cooling off in its turquoise water.

Where To Play:

Although it's the smallest of the Virgin Islands, St. John embodies a true beach vacation. Trunk Bay–one of its most popular beaches–has white, pillow-like sand reminiscent of an exotic cloud. Its crystal-clear ocean is encompassed by lush greenery, offering a spitting image of what you have been dreaming about all winter long. Expect to find us here with our favorite book from sunrise to sundown.
