Postcard from Shelter Island with Filipa de Abreu
“Summer is not a season, it’s a state of mind. Loose clothing, no shoes, sunglasses and messy hair.”
—Filipa de Abreu
As summer unfolds, we journey with tastemaker Filipa de Abreu to Shelter Island–a coastal getaway about 100 miles from Manhattan, yet feels a world away with its quiet pace and Americana-style charm. Here, Filipa shares everything on her itinerary, and all the effortless styles she packed in her suitcase.
Destination: Shelter Island
Staying:
Filipa in the Jade Blazer, Arlo Shorts, and Harlow Hat
Overlooking the Peconic Bay, the Pridwin is a nearly 100-year-old hotel that instantly evokes nostalgic summers on the coast. Adirondack chairs and backgammon boards, cabana stripes and string lights–it’s about unwinding and unplugging in a wonderfully old-school way.
And nothing says “OOO” quite like head-to-toe terry cloth.
Lunching
Opened in 2013, Marie Eiffel Market is a must-visit spot beloved for its sandwiches, pastries, and produce. (We couldn’t resist the lobster roll and fries.) Dine in the welcoming, homey interior, or step outside for a scenic meal on the water.

“In the summertime, it’s always cocktail hour.”
—Filipa de Abreu
Grab a seat at The Crescent Bar, located in the Pridwin, to cap off a leisurely day of beach bathing or poolside lounging. And much like our drinks, we like our outfits with a twist, like the Zelena dress’s mix of stripes and paisley motifs.
